DAY 1 . To Mumbai (Bombay)
Morning flight from Heathrow on British Airways arriving at midnight. Transfer
to the Taj President for the night.
DAY 2 . To Aurangabad
Sightseeing of Mumbai including the Prince of Wales Museum. Evening transfer
to airport for flight to Aurangabad to staying at the Taj Residency for two
nights.
DAY 3 . Aurangabad, Ajanta and Ellora
Day excursion to the World Heritage sites of the Ajanta and Ellora caves.The
amazing 2000 year old Buddhist cave paintings at Ajanta reflect in great detail
and clarity the life and times of bygone ages. The Ellora Cave complex comprises
Buddhist, Jain and Hindu Caves.The Jain Caves are intricately detailed, the
Buddhist range from the simple through to the exceptional, whilst the vibrant
Hindu dynamism culminates in the Kailasa Temple Cave, a study in sheer technical
genius and sculptural perfection.
DAY 4 . To Mumbai
Early morning flight to Mumbai. Morning excursion to Elephanta caves a World
Heritage site created between AD 459-750. Stay at the Taj President.
DAY 5 . To Udaipur
Fly to Udaipur with afternoon sightseeing of the city including the City Palace
and Museum with its fascinating collection of artefacts giving a glimpse of
the fabulous lifestyle of the Rulers of Udaipur. Stay at the Lake Palace for
two nights.
DAY 6 . Udaipur
Day excursion to Nagda and Eklingi Temples. Sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola.
DAY 7 . To Jaipur
Morning flight to Jaipur. Afternoon sightseeing to include the City Palace
complex, Jantar Mantar Observatory and the delightful Palace of Winds. Optional
evening visit to Choki Dhani for a traditional rustic Rajasthani meal. Two
nights stay at the Jai Mahal Palace.
DAY 8 . Jaipur
Morning excursion to the Amber Fort, a superb example of Rajput architecture.
Take an elephant ride winding slowly up to the hilltop fort. Afternoon free
to visit the colourful bazaars.
DAY 9 . To Agra via Fatehpur Sikri
Morning drive to Fatehpur Sikri the deserted city of the Emperor Akbar. Overnight
at the Taj View.
DAY 10 . To Delhi
Sunrise visit to the ultimate expression of love - The Taj Mahal. Morning
sightseeing of Agra Fort, including the rooms where Shah Jahan was imprisoned,
poignantly situated overlooking the waters of the Yamuna River to the Taj
Mahal. Other visits include the Itmad-ud-Daulah and colourful markets. Evening
Shatabdi train to Delhi with two nights at the Park Royal intercontinental.
DAY 11 . Delhi
Late morning start to sightseeing in Old and New Delhi. The Jama Masjid, Indias
largest mosque, the beautiful Lotus Temple, Humayans Tomb and Red Fort
are all included.
DAY 12 . To Bhubaneshwar
Morning flight to Bhubaneshwar, with afternoon tour of the Temple site including
the 54 metre high Lingaraj Mandir. Vibrant Orissan sculptures feast the eyes,
and are particularily striking in style and intricacy of design. Two nights
at the Trident.
DAY 13 . Bhubaneshwar
Morning excursion to the Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves, decorated with lively
images, and believed to be originally excavated for Jain ascetics. Afternoon
at leisure.
DAY 14 . To Puri - Konark
Morning drive to Puri via the mid-13th C Sun Temple at Konark a World Heritage
site. Conceived as a magnificent chariot for the Sun God Surya, it is considered
the finest example of Orissan temple architecture. Afternoon sightseeing of
Puri, (one of the four dhams - holy pilgrimage sites for Hindus) including
the Jagannath Mandir. Overnight Mayfair Resorts.
DAY 15 . To Kolkatta (Calcutta)
Morning transfer to Bhubaneshwar airport and fly to Kolkatta with afternoon
at leisure. Stay at the Taj Bengal for two nights.
DAY 16 . Kolkatta
Visit flower market at dawn filled with exotic blooms and heady scents. Later
tour Kolkatta visiting the main sights including the Victoria Memorial, Botanical
Gardens, Kali Temple and National Museum.
DAY 17 . To Hyderabad
A morning of leisure before flight to Hyderabad in the afternoon. Stay for
two nights at the Taj Krishna.
DAY 18 . Hyderabad
Morning visit to Golconda Fort. Afternoon sightseeing of Hyderabad.
DAY 19 . To Bangalore
Morning flight to Bangalore and afternoon sightseeing of Indias Silicon
City, a delightful blend of modern sophistication and traditional heritage.
Afternoon highlights on a city tour include Lalbagh Botanical Gardens and
Tipu Sultans Palace. Overnight Taj West End.
DAY 20 . To Mysore
Morning drive to Mysore via Srirangapatnam, the remains of Hyder Ali and Tipu
Sultans capital demolished by the British. Also visit the Daria Daulat
Bagh,Tipus summer palace and, once, home to Colonel Wellesley, later
to become the Duke of Wellington. Afternoon sightseeing of Mysore including
the Palace Museum filled with memorabilia, the Sri Chamundeswari Temple on
the summit of the Chamundi hills reached by 1000 steps, or car! Also see the
monolithic 5 metre high
DAY 21 . Mysore
Morning excursion to Somnathpur, a star shaped temple built in 1268 during
the Hoysala period. It is an incredibly beautiful temple, with wonderful sculptures,
including scenes from the Ramayana. Remainder of day at leisure.
DAY 22 . To Nagarhole
After breakfast drive to Nagarhole. Afternoon game viewing in the rich habitat
of the Nagarhole National Park, home to the Big Four of India
- tiger, leopard, elephant and gaur (Indian bison). Stay at the Kabini River
Lodge for two nights.
DAY 23 . Nagarhole
Morning elephant safari and afternoon game drive with an exciting coracle
ride. Look out for sloth bear, sambar and barking deer and the magnificent
Malabar giant squirrel.
DAY 24 . To Ooty
After a farewell early morning game drive depart for Ooty, with an afternoon
visit to the Botanical Gardens. Stay at the Taj Savoy for two nights.
DAY 25 . Ooty
Full day with car and driver to explore at leisure the beautiful countryside,
or take the toy train to Coonoor.
DAY 26 . To Cochin (Madras) - Covelong
Drive to Cochin. In the evening watch a performance of the complex Kathakali
dance. Arrive early to see the dancers apply the intricate makeup. Two nights
at the Taj Malabar.
DAY 27 . Cochin - Backwater cruise
Drive to Alleppey for a relaxing Backwater cruise to Kottayam, and return
to Cochin by car in the late afternoon.
DAY 28 . To Chennai - Covelong
Morning city tour of Cochin including the Chinese Fishing Nets, Jewish Synagogue
and the Dutch Palace. Afternoon flight to Chennai and transfer to the Fishermans
Cove Hotel for four nights.
DAY 29 . Covelong
Morning excursion to Mamallapuram to see the delicate Shore Temple, Arjunas
Penance and the Five Rathas - temples sculptured in the shape of chariots.
Afternoon at leisure.
DAY 30 . Covelong
Optional excursion after breakfast to Kanchipuram to see the magnificent temples
including the 7th-8th C Pallava Kailasanatha, and Sri Ekambaranthar with its
59 metre towering Gopuram. Remainder of day at leisure.
DAY 31 . To Chennai
Day at leisure. Early morning transfer to International Airport for British
Airways flight.
DAY 32 . Departure Chennai
